Mario the Tailor

This is Mario, the owner of Mario’s Tailors in Tucson, Ariz.

I stopped into his tiny studio located at 2030 E Broadway Blvd. near Campbell Avenue. I picked up a suit at Last Chance, more on that soon, and needed to have some work done to it.

Mario said he has been tailoring clothes for more than 50 years. He began when he was 11 in Mexico. He’s been in the same Tucson location for the last 16 years. He’s also worked on Rodeo Drive as a tailor and a custom suit maker.

Every off the rack suit needs to have alterations done to make it fit its wearer. In my case, Mario is shortening the sleeves a touch and suppressing the waist so that the suit follows the contours of my body. Just seeing the difference while Mario was pinning the waist was impressive.

He is also adjusting the hem on the pants.

The price breakdown:

  • Waist suppression: $45
  • Sleeve adjustment: $30
  • Pant Hem: $15
